MAS sustainable manufacturing - 3 days
Sustainable manufacturing will help deliver the Government's targets to reduce carbon emissions and waste as well as contributing towards a more efficient and environmentally aware industrial base.
This Sustainable Manufacturing course is part of the Manufacturing Masters which is supported by The Leeds University Business School programme, offering work-based learning to manufacturing employees. On completion of the course, employees will gain a City & Guilds Licentiateship qualification.
The course involves a 3 day training programme and a 6 week on-the-job project. It is intended to provide manufacturing employees with the opportunity to improve their skills, knowledge and confidence in addressing one of the key issues faced by manufacturers.
This introductory training will provide an excellent overview to a wide range of manufacturing employees.
This course is currently 50% funded by the Manufacturing Masters programme.

Course objectives:
- provide an overview of Sustainable Development and manufacturing
- outline sustainable strategies and techniques which are tailored towards enhancing business performance and efficiency
- provide the opportunity for practical and interactive exercises.
Course content:
- materials and resource efficiency: reviewing inputs & processes and considering alternatives
- manufacturing methods & design: overview of manufacturing methods that can be used to support the sustainability agenda
- procurement and the supply chain: sustainable approaches towards procurement & the supply chain
- energy management & efficiency: evaluating energy management (carbon footprinting, renewable energy and reduced emissions)
- waste management: waste hierarchy, waste streams & key legislation
- distribution & logistics: assessing key distribution and logistics issues with regards to sustainable manufacturing
- social impacts of manufacturing: assessing the impact of operations on the wider community and stakeholders
- techniques for sustainable manufacturing: environmental management systems, monitoring and auditing methods and more
- developing a sustainable manufacturing strategy: creating a bespoke sustainability strategy for your company.
