The historic market town of Barnard Castle sits on the north bank of the River Tees, in County Durham, Northern England.  It is 21 miles southwest of the county town of Durham, with easy access to Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Richmond in North Yorkshire. It takes its name from the 12th-century castle around which it grew and is steeped in both history and archaeology.
