With an increased focus on verification and validation, how an organisation chooses to address its carbon emissions will be under scrutiny – to a point where it could even determine its ‘license to operate’.   • Net Zero Emissions

    The accepted definition of net zero is where global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity are in balance with emissions reductions.

    This means that when carbon emissions are generated and released into the atmosphere, an action removes an equal amount of emissions out of the atmosphere. This can be through sustainability focussed interventions through processes and operations or where it is harder to deliver decarbonisation, through mitigation or offsetting.

    Mitigation can be done through either nature-led mitigation solutions or technological focused mitigation solutions.

  • Decarbonisation

    Decarbonisation describes the removal and reduction of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Decarbonisation is principally achieved through focussing on energy-related activities and ensuring these activities are either undertaken using renewable energy or low-carbon solutions.

    Decarbonisation is a key way in which organisations can take meaningful steps towards achieving their net zero goals.

    We work with organisations to establish pathways to decarbonisation through both their operations and through the appropriate mitigations.

  • Scopes 1, 2 and 3

    Scope 1, 2, and 3  emissions form the basis of all mandatory carbon emissions, GHG, ESG and sustainability-focused reporting.

    Developed as part of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol these emissions can be split into three groupings of direct emissions. Scope 1 is when an organisation creates emissions through its own operations, and indirect emissions is scope 2, occuring when emissions are created on the behalf of the organisation such as in energy generation. Scope 3 emissions occur via an organisation’s wider value chain – sometimes known as supply-chain emissions).

    Most organisations find Scope 3 emissions calculation, management and reduction challenging. Our team of carbon experts work with organisations to simplify and gain greater control of this area for a business or organisation.

  • Scope 4

    A new scope is beginning to emerge and is being adopted by leading businesses. Scope 4 emissions is a new voluntary metric for avoided emissions. It provides a fuller picture of the impact of carbon emissions.

    The World Resources Institute defines Scope 4 emissions as emission reductions that “occur outside a product’s life cycle or value chain but as a result of the use of that product”.

    Our team of carbon experts work with organisations to better understand the implications of this emerging scope and the benefits derived from accounting and reporting them alongside the other 3 scopes.

  • Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

    The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is the current gold standard for organisations to demonstrate that their detailed net zero reduction plan or roadmap is valid and accurate through verification.

    By establishing a science-based target that has been verified by the SBTi, an organisation benefits from increased transparency and external credibility given to their net zero goals and wider sustainability targets that have been set.

    We work with clients to develop, embed, verify and implement the SBTi pathway, reduction and transition plans.

  • Net Zero Transition Plans and Reduction Roadmaps

    Very few organisations have credible Net Zero Transition Plans (NZTPs) in place.

    NZTPs allow organisations to deliver upon its strategic sustainability and net zero carbon emission goals through a detailed action plan that is time-aligned with near term, medium term and long term ambitions.

    We work with organisations of all sizes and budgets to ensure that their NZTPs are robust, accurate, credible, transparent, verifiable and deliverable.

  • Carbon Life Cycle Analysis

    A Carbon Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a systematic approach to establish the carbon and wider environmental impacts of particular product or service. This process begins at the extraction stage of raw minerals or materials, through transportation, manufacturing and its usage. It also takes into consideration recycling, reuse, repurposing and disposal.

    We work with clients through the four stages of the LCA from (1) goal and scope; (2) inventory analysis; (3) impact assessment; and (4) recommendations/interpretation. Our team works with organisations to ensure that the insights derived from the LCA process can be developed and delivered into actionable strategies and initiatives and are that are fully compliant with the requirements of the Digital Product Passport Initiative.

  • Product Carbon Footprint and Digital Product Passports

    The Digital Product Passport (DDP) Initiative will be the key instrument for detail and to understanding the wider environmental and carbon emissions impact of a product and its supply-chain.

    It aims to support sustainable product production; establish and create value through circular business models; produce detailed and verifiable documentation to provide consumer confidence in purchasing decisions and allow for recognised verification against legal obligations.

    Whilst the initial focus from 2024 will be on three key markets – textiles, construction and batteries – it is expected another area of focus will be added that may include electronics, packaging or food.

    We work with clients to ensure full compliance with this initiative and identify opportunities to better align with any existing Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) work.

  • Carbon Accounting and Footprinting

    Carbon accounting is now an industry requirement.

    Carbon accounting is the principal method that organisations can use to measure and manage their carbon emissions. If comprehensive, it can allow an organisation to better understand their true carbon impact and allow for appropriate and deliverable carbon footprinting, carbon reduction strategies, and related initiatives to be undertaken.

    Using carbon accounting to quantify and calculate an organisation’s carbon impact is the starting point to establishing baseline and reduction targets.

    We work with clients to measure and manage their physical carbon accounting (through Scopes 1, 2 and 3) and their financial carbon accounting (through establishing a financial market value for the carbon produced and absorbed).

    We work with clients to ensure full compliance with this initiative and identify opportunities to better align with any existing Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) work.

  • Carbon Budgets and Project Management

    We work with organisations to establish, monitor and report on organisational carbon budgets as well as project-related carbon budgets.

    Carbon budgets are used by organisations and are the maximum amount of carbon emissions that can be emitted over a period of time or against a specific project, to limit and control the amount of emissions before they exceed a specified figure.

    A carbon budget is based upon carbon science and strategy to help establish, monitor and maintain acourse to deliver on emissions reduction targets.

  • Carbon Mitigation – Nature based and Technological Solutions

    Carbon Mitigation is a key mechanism in reducing climate change.

    It is centred around the reduction of sources of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere or in the creation of carbon sinks that effectively act as storage of greenhouse gases. Both approaches focus on the reduction and or stabilisation of greenhouse gases.

    Nature-led solutions centre on oceans, forests and soils (blue carbon, peatland restoration and tree planting) as effective routes to reduce and stabilise emissions.

    Technological interventions via mitigation technology, centre around carbon capture and storage.

    Our team works with clients to establish the most impactful and relevant mitigation strategies and accredited programs that can be local, regional, national and or international.

    We work with clients to advise on the development and delivery of all sizes of low-carbon projects that reduce the overall negative impact of the project across the multiple phases – in planning, design, delivery, use and operation.
