About us

People, projects, and nature-based solutions for lasting impact

Founded in Sheffield over 30 years ago, Ecus has been at the forefront of the environmental sector, evolving alongside society’s changing environmental needs. Our headquarters remain in the ‘Outdoor City,’ complemented by offices across the UK, enabling us to deliver comprehensive services nationwide.

Throughout our journey, we have witnessed significant shifts in how organisations approach development. What used to be environmental “nice to haves” are now becoming obligatory via expanding legislation. Our team’s depth of expertise and the collaboration between disciplines allow us to provide excellent benefits to clients and the wider community, supporting businesses, organisations and local authorities through these changes.

As a medium-sized company, we maintain a balance between flexibility and a personal touch, enabling us to effectively manage projects of all sizes, including the largest schemes in the country.

In 2022, we became an integral part of Cura Terrae, a leading UK environmental group dedicated to providing innovative consultancy, services, and solutions aimed at protecting the Earth.

Part of Cura Terrae

Cura Terrae is a leading environmental services group dedicated to advancing sustainable practices across various sectors. There are around 350 employees working across 14 sites, which allows us to provide a broad range of environmental services across the UK. As a proud member of this group, Ecus benefits from a wealth of resources and expertise that enhance our ability to deliver exceptional services. Our collaboration with Cura Terrae allows us to offer a comprehensive range of solutions. Together, we work towards creating a resilient future, fostering innovation, and promoting best practices in environmental management. This partnership strengthens our commitment to protecting the Earth and supporting our clients in achieving their sustainability goals.

Our impact

We take on a variety of challenging projects, all with their own unique hurdles to overcome. These have included rewarding projects such as transforming a power station to an urban village with our ecological and arboricultural services, managing invasive species in national parks, developing assessment and management techniques for invasive species, and working with councils and local authorities to allow development while supporting protected species.

Whether supporting Sheffield City Council with large scale re-roofing for over 5,000 homes with bat surveys, mitigation and licensing, or delivering Biodiversity Net Gain for an ambitious landscaping, ecological and habitat improvement scheme in collaborations with companies like Volker Rail and Story Contracting, our multidisciplinary teams work together to ensure the natural environment and wildlife habitats are significantly improved as a result of any work.

For our Hope Valley project we are planting more than 40,000 trees and shrubs (including 1km of new hedgerow) alone to compensate for the railway upgrade works and provide biodiversity gains to the local environment.
